Nose Surgery in Dallas, Texas
Highland Park Plastic Surgery Center

While some people are born with a beautiful nose that complements their facial profile, many individuals are not so fortunate. A nose that is disproportionately large, humped or crooked can distract from the beauty of the other facial features. A less-than-beautiful nose can also create psychological problems as the person might develop an unhealthy self-image and begin to feel unattractive. As an accomplished plastic surgeon, Dr. George Toledo recognizes the importance of harmonious nasal contours, and therefore offers several nose surgery procedures that can create a more proportionate nose. He is a board certified plastic surgeon as well as an otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon. This extensive training gives Dr. Toledo expertise in rhinoplasty. If you have been thinking about getting a nose job, explore the paragraphs below to learn more about rhinoplasty.

Nose Surgery: Is It for Me?

Dr. Toledo recommends that patients wait until the nose is fully developed usually in the mid teen years before pursuing rhinoplasty. In addition, men and women who request nose surgery should have realistic expectations as to how their nose will look after surgery. In order to understand what results can be accomplished through rhinoplasty, Dr. Toledo encourages all prospective patients to arrange a one on one consultation with him and see if they are a good candidate. This consultation includes computer imaging.

While reasons for pursuing rhinoplasty vary, some of the more common include:

  • Removal of a prominent hump
  • Narrowing a wide nose
  • Reduction of the nostril size
  • Refinement of the nasal tip
  • Treatment of a nose injured in an accident

Often patients have other problems with the nose that can be repaired at the same time as rhinoplasty. These include:

  • Correction of a deviated septum causing breathing problems or infections
  • Treatment of a nose injured in an accident
  • Treatment of chronic sinusitis & polyps

Rhinoplasty or cosmetic changes to the nose is appropriate for patients who desire more pronounced changes to the nasal shape. This procedure requires a very small incision across the columella — the thin strip of skin between the nostrils. Once healed, the incision is practically unnoticeable because it is located underneath the nose. Dr. Toledo uses the open rhinoplasty technique in order to reduce a prominent hump, change the tip of the nose, or adjust the form of the nostrils. This approach might also be needed for patients whose nose has been damaged as a result of various accidents.

To balance the profile some patients benefit from a chin implant or chin augmentation. If the chin is out of proportion or “under projected” this can be corrected by making a small incision in the mouth to place a small implant. Dr. Toledo is able to sculpt the implant to ensure a custom fit. The chin implant helps achieve optimal facial profile harmony.

After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty recovery can be divided into two major stages: the immediate post-surgery period and long-term recovery. The immediate recovery period usually lasts about one week. During this time, your nose will be a little swollen and possibly bruised. In order to retain the new nasal shape, you will also need to wear a nasal splint. Your nose will feel stuffed and somewhat uncomfortable, but any major pain will be managed with prescription medications. At the end of the immediate recovery period, most of the swelling will be gone and you will be able to return to work and other social activities. The long-term recovery period will last anywhere from 2-4 months. During this time, any residual swelling will subside and your nose will achieve its final form. While no special care is required during this time, you should try to avoid trauma to the nose and prolonged sun exposure.
